CELESTIELLE RECOMMENDS:

Cape Town

Some of our favorite activities

  • Take a ride on the iconic Table Mountain Cableway. Named one of the “New 7 Wonders of Nature,” Table Mountain treats visitors to some of the most stunning views in Africa.

  • Tour Robben Island, which served as a political prison until 1996; it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit Nelson Mandela’s cell, where he was imprisoned for 18 years. Robben Island also offers the best views of Cape Town itself.

  • Visit the District Six Museum, an ode to a vibrant, multiracial neighborhood at its heyday in the 1960s and 1970s, but subsequently ruined by apartheid. A visit here is as emotionally moving as it is informative of the region’s complicated history.

  • Head to Boulders Beach for a chance to spot some African penguins. The beach is the site of one of only two mainland colonies of this endangered bird.

  • Visit the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, with more than 100 galleries. The building, a converted grain silo, is itself an architectural highlight. It was once the tallest building in sub-Saharan Africa.
