Some of our favorite activities
Take a ride on the iconic Table Mountain Cableway. Named one of the “New 7 Wonders of Nature,” Table Mountain treats visitors to some of the most stunning views in Africa.
Tour Robben Island, which served as a political prison until 1996; it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit Nelson Mandela’s cell, where he was imprisoned for 18 years. Robben Island also offers the best views of Cape Town itself.
Visit the District Six Museum, an ode to a vibrant, multiracial neighborhood at its heyday in the 1960s and 1970s, but subsequently ruined by apartheid. A visit here is as emotionally moving as it is informative of the region’s complicated history.
Head to Boulders Beach for a chance to spot some African penguins. The beach is the site of one of only two mainland colonies of this endangered bird.
Visit the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, with more than 100 galleries. The building, a converted grain silo, is itself an architectural highlight. It was once the tallest building in sub-Saharan Africa.
